Driving Rules in Panama

For people who are new to Panama, driving can be a little troublesome and they must understand the basics of driving rules and regulations here before embarking on their journey in this country. The most important driving rule in Panama is to always carry your passport with you while you are driving. A photocopy of the passport is not accepted and the police will always ask for the driver’s passport as the form of identification. If you are a foreigner in the country, then your license will be valid in Panama only for 90 days and after that you will have to exchange it for a certified Panamanian driving license.

Common Road Rules and Regulations in Panama
  • Always drive on the right side of the road.
  • The driver should be at least 18 years of age.
  • The use of mobile phones while driving is strictly prohibited.
  • All children in the car must be in their respective child seats.
  • Third- party insurance is a must while driving in any part of Panama.
  • Some of the documents which must always be kept in the car while driving include vehicle registration document, documents of insurance, proof of identity, valid driving license, passport as well as accident report form.
  • It is mandatory for all the occupants to wear seat belts.
  • Children below the age of 5 must be seated in the rear of the car in child seats.
  • All vehicles must stop at red traffic signals.
  • Speed limit: Speed limit set for all vehicles in the city streets is 25- 30 km/hr. On the highways, the speed limit is set at 100km/hr.

There are fines imposed on vehicles which violate any of the above mentioned road and traffic rules in Panama.
